XPlace CEO Advocates for Safer Liquidity Solutions in Crypto

Call for Improved Liquidity Options in Cryptocurrency

Artem Ponomarev, CEO of digital-wealth platform XPlace, has underscored the urgent need for enhanced crypto-backed borrowing tools to provide safer paths to liquidity for digital assets. His remarks come at a time when decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols collectively manage over $42 billion in total value locked.

Current State of DeFi Lending

As DeFi lending expands, Ponomarev argues that investors must have effective means to access liquidity without the necessity of offloading their long-term digital-asset holdings. He emphasized that equity in asset-backed borrowing, similar to traditional finance’s borrowing against securities or properties, should be a prevalent option in the digital realm.

The Need for Investment Flexibility

Ponomarev stated, “I think we’re moving into a stage where the question is no longer simply whether people will own digital assets, but what they can actually do with the wealth they’ve built.” This viewpoint aligns with the growing trend of collateralized borrowing, where investors can use Bitcoin or tokenized securities to gain liquidity while maintaining exposure to their assets.

Potential of Tokenized Stocks

According to data from RWA.xyz, the market for tokenized stocks has reached approximately $2.34 billion. These digital representations of equities could serve as alternative collateral sources, broadening the options available for crypto-backed lending.

Managing Legal and Regulation Risks

Ponomarev highlighted that tokens representing digital assets must be carefully assessed for legal implications and ownership rights. The SEC has reiterated that tokenized securities are subject to existing federal laws, raising questions about rights and protections for investors.

Proposed Solutions for Safer Borrowing

Ponomarev proposed that any lending systems developed should include robust methods for verifying the custody, ownership, and value of collateralized assets. He stressed the importance of clear interest charges and liquidation terms, advocating for conservative loan-to-value ratios to mitigate risks associated with cryptocurrency volatility.

Risks Associated with Liquidation

Access to liquidity may incur losses if collateral values dip significantly. The Bank for International Settlements has noted that decentralized loans are often overcollateralized due to the unpredictable nature of cryptocurrency prices and the potential for automated liquidation. This raises significant risks for borrowers who could lose their assets if rapid market declines trigger forced sales.

As digital assets continue to gain traction, Ponomarev’s insights emphasize the need for the crypto industry to evolve, offering borrowers the flexibility to leverage their assets wisely while safeguarding their investments.
