Sony’s Conditional Approval for U.S. Stablecoin Trust Bank

Sony’s Conditional Approval for U.S. Stablecoin Trust Bank

Technology giant Sony is making strides into the U.S. stablecoin market, having received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank subsidiary, named Connectia Trust. This subsidiary will focus on managing dollar-denominated stablecoins.

Details of the Trust Bank

Connectia Trust, which will be based in New York, is fully owned by Sony Bank and will be capitalized with $40 million to facilitate its upcoming stablecoin business operations. However, operations will not commence until all necessary approvals are obtained, including final approval from the OCC.

Growing Stablecoin Market

The move comes amid a significant surge in stablecoin usage. According to Visa’s on-chain dashboard, transaction volume reached a record high of $1.79 trillion last month, reflecting a 63% increase from May and more than double the figures from a year earlier. Approximately 99% of the total $311 billion market capitalization is attributed to dollar-pegged tokens.

Competition in the Space

Despite the growing market, Sony will face substantial competition. Current market leaders, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC), hold approximately $250 billion of the total stablecoin market. Other companies, including Stripe-owned Bridge, Paxos, and Circle Internet, have also gained conditional OCC approvals to launch federal trust-bank structures related to stablecoins.

Implications of Regulatory Moves

The approval aligns with broader U.S. regulatory efforts that aim to establish a comprehensive framework for payment stablecoins under the proposed GENIUS Act. This legislation seeks to provide a structured regulatory environment to support developments in the stablecoin sector.
