Hong Kong Court Upholds Prison Sentence Linked to USDT Trafficking Case

A Hong Kong appeals court has confirmed a 56-month prison term for Ma Zhihao, following links established between ransom payments from a human trafficking ring and a cryptocurrency exchange account registered in his name. The ruling comes as authorities continue to investigate the rising use of digital currencies in illegal operations.

Tracing the Ransom Payments

The court reaffirmed Ma’s sentence after police investigated a ransom payment made for one of the victims. Authorities traced 8,127 USDT back to an exchange account belonging to Ma. The digital currency was ultimately converted into approximately HK$63,000 and deposited into his HSBC bank account.

According to reports by Caixin, the court rejected Ma’s appeal for a reduced sentence, citing the direct connection of the blockchain transaction records that demonstrated his involvement in the criminal operation. This sentencing was part of a larger human trafficking case involving multiple victims.

Details of the Trafficking Scheme

The trafficking network reportedly recruited victims from 2021 to August 2022 using enticing offers of high-paying jobs, predominantly circulated on platforms like Facebook, Telegram, and Instagram. Promised jobs included work at casinos in Cambodia and the purchasing of luxury goods. However, upon arrival in Southeast Asia, victims often had their travel documents seized and were forced into scam operations.

One notable case involved a 20-year-old individual who responded to a Telegram ad promising HK$20,000. After traveling to Thailand, he was taken to Myanmar, where he was informed that a ransom of $20,000 was required for his release. His girlfriend paid over 9,500 USDT to secure his freedom, leading investigators to trace the funds back to Ma’s exchange account.

The Role of Blockchain Technology in Investigations

Blockchain transaction records proved pivotal in linking the ransom paid with Ma’s identity. The Hong Kong police utilized advanced tools since the unveiling of their CryptoTrace system, which enables officers to analyze blockchain data to identify connections between illicit financial activities.

Serious Nature of Trafficking Operations

The case reflects a disturbing pattern of recruiting tactics employed by trafficking organizations that continue to target vulnerable individuals. Some victims reported physical abuse, confinement, and coercion to engage in fraud, highlighting the severe consequences of these schemes.

In the broader context, a report from Chainalysis in February 2026 stated that the incidence of cryptocurrency-related trafficking payments surged by 85% in 2025. This phenomenon underscores the evolving challenges law enforcement faces with digital currencies increasingly used in criminal scenarios.

Conclusion

Ma’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with online fraud and trafficking and emphasizes the essential role that cryptocurrency tracking plays in the ongoing fight against these crimes.
