Compound Finance Invests $52 Million in Shift to Institutional Focus

Compound Finance, a leading decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol, has announced a strategic shift toward attracting institutional clients by approving a record budget of $52 million and revamping its leadership team. This decision comes in response to a significant decline in the total value locked (TVL) on its platform, which has fallen from a peak of $12 billion in September 2021 to just $1.2 billion today.

Leadership Overhaul and New Strategies

The initiative, aimed at revitalizing growth, includes a complete overhaul of the leadership team. The new appointments feature Christopher Donovan as Chief Operating Officer, previously with the Near Foundation, and Steven Liu, who scaled Maple Finance’s assets from $500 million to $5 billion, now taking the role of Chief Product Officer. Additionally, Aaron Schnarch, former CEO of Coinbase Custody, will serve as an executive director.

Pursuing Institutional Adoption

With the DeFi sector facing challenges such as reduced retail participation and increased competition from other protocols like Aave, which boasts a TVL of $14.8 billion, Compound aims to attract institutional users by offering real-world asset integration and enhanced credit infrastructure. The organization has processed approximately $480 billion in deposits and borrowing since its inception in 2018.

A Broader Context for DeFi

The entire DeFi sector is currently experiencing a downturn, with the total value locked across various protocols dropping by more than a third this year to around $70 billion. This decline has been attributed to market corrections, lower yield rates, and security issues faced by several protocols. Despite these challenges, forecasts suggest that the DeFi market could reach $2.7 trillion by 2030, especially with the growth of tokenized real-world assets.

Industry Insight and Future Prospects

Experts believe Compound’s shift towards institutional focus is a timely and necessary move. Gal Stern, chief business development officer at deBridge, noted that now is the optimal time for institutions to engage in these initiatives and adapt to the evolving financial landscape. Schnarch emphasized the need for compliance and technical requirements that meet traditional finance standards to foster greater institutional confidence in the DeFi sector.

Ran Hammer, chief business officer at Orbs, remarked that the transition in DeFi from retail participation to institutional engagement marks a significant shift in the market structure. The substantial budget allocation and the new team’s institutional experience are expected to enhance Compound’s credibility and execution in the competitive landscape of decentralized finance.
