Bybit Foils $700M in Potential Losses Post $1.46B Hack

Bybit Prevents Substantial Losses Following Major Hack

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has successfully intercepted over $700 million in potential user losses during the first half of 2026. This proactive measure comes after the platform endured a $1.46 billion hack in February 2025, prompting significant upgrades to its security protocols. Bybit’s measures included expanding its real-time blockchain monitoring and implementing AI-assisted threat detection.

Impressive Security Measures Yield Results

In its latest Risk & Security Report, Bybit detailed that it blocked more than 30,000 suspicious withdrawal requests, effectively safeguarding nearly 20,000 users. The enhanced security architecture now operates across three main layers: user account protections, continuous on-chain monitoring, and AI-supported security operations, with human specialists overseeing critical decisions.

AI and Blockchain Monitoring Enhancements

During the report’s covered period from January 1 to June 15, 2026, Bybit’s monitoring system achieved comprehensive oversight of all relevant on-chain activities. This included detection of 10 security incidents involving listed tokens on the exchange, none of which resulted in losses. The report highlighted that over 100,000 security alerts were processed with AI assistance, drastically reducing the time from initial risk reviews.

Follow-Up on Previous Breach

The rapid advancements come in response to a historical breach which drained over 400,000 ETH – valued at approximately $1.46 billion – from Bybit’s Ethereum cold wallet. Investigators later attributed the hack to North Korean hacking group Lazarus. Bybit has taken formal legal action against North Korea and the associated group in pursuit of recovery related to that incident.

Broader Implications for Crypto Security

Across the crypto industry, security remains a pressing issue, with data suggesting that compromised keys and infrastructure were responsible for 88.3% of the $764 million stolen in Q2 2026. Bybit has capitalized on automated testing tools that enhance vulnerability detection speeds, achieving significant reductions in assessment cycle times.

Legal Actions and Recovery Efforts

As Bybit continues its legal battle to recover stolen assets, earlier this month, it filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court against the North Korean government and the Lazarus Group. The exchange seeks judicial intervention to reclaim its losses and has received a preliminary injunction preventing asset transfers by certain defendants during the litigation process.
