XRP Ledger Retires Five Amendments, Users Remain Unaffected

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has officially retired five long-standing protocol amendments in the recent release of xrpld version 3.3.0. This update does not alter existing user functionality or necessitate any action from XRP holders.

Details of the Retirement

With the implementation of version 3.3.0, five amendments that have been active for over two years were retired, thus making their behaviors permanent within the core protocol. These amendments include: Clawback, fixDisallowIncomingV1, fixInnerObjTemplate, fixNFTokenReserve, and fixUniversalNumber. It is important to note that although Clawback has been retired, it remains operational as its functionality is not removed.

According to RippleX software engineer Mayukha Vadari, the retirement process involved removing outdated pre-amendment code while retaining the functionalities that were established when the amendments were activated. “This is purely a codebase cleanup and won’t affect any users,” Vadari stated.

Implications for Users and Node Operators

For ordinary XRP holders, the retirement of these amendments will not require any updates, migrations, or transactions concerning their wallets. The operational rules established by these protocols remain unchanged.

However, node operators are advised to upgrade to version 3.3.0 promptly. This update is crucial to maintain service continuity and ensure compatibility with any future amendments that may be activated. In the past, failure to update software can result in nodes becoming blocked from participating effectively in the network.

Looking Ahead

While five amendments have been permanently retired, six new proposals have been introduced with this release. These include BatchV1_1, ConfidentialTransfer, DynamicMPT, PermissionDelegationV1_1, Sponsor, and fixCleanup3_3_0. Each of these amendments requires independent approval from the validators before activation on Mainnet.

The amendment retirement process highlights the XRPL’s systematic approach to ensuring the protocol remains streamlined and efficient without compromising user experience. As the blockchain landscape evolves, the community now turns its attention towards the new amendments awaiting validator approval.
