Wintermute Expands Business Focus with $1 Billion AI Initiative

Wintermute’s Strategic Shift: A $1 Billion AI Investment

Wintermute, a prominent firm in the cryptocurrency landscape, is embarking on a significant diversification strategy with plans to invest approximately $1 billion over the next five years into high-frequency trading and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Transitioning Beyond Crypto

The London-based company aims to expand its revenue sources, targeting non-crypto markets to account for over 50% of its total revenue by the close of 2027, up from just 10% currently. This strategy comes in light of a notable decline in crypto market activity, according to a report by Bloomberg citing founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy.

Funding the Expansion

Wintermute intends to finance this ambitious investment largely from its retained earnings. The decision follows a downturn in trading volume, which plummeted to around $10 billion daily this year, down from $15 billion in 2025, coinciding with a drop in the price of Bitcoin, which has fluctuated significantly from its peak.

Competitive Landscape

With this investment, Wintermute seeks to bolster its competitive stance against major players like Jane Street, Citadel Securities, and XTX Markets. The latter announced plans to invest around $1.15 billion to enhance its data center capabilities, demonstrating the growing emphasis on technological infrastructure in the trading sector.

New Ventures and Capabilities

Wintermute has already begun expanding its trading activities to include exchange-traded funds and commodities, having introduced 24-hour trading of West Texas Intermediate crude oil earlier this year. Furthermore, the firm’s recent acquisition of broker-dealer status in the U.S. enhances its ability to trade stocks and stock options, marking a significant step in its strategy.

Looking Ahead

Gaevoy indicated that Wintermute was profitable in 2025 and anticipates maintaining profitability this year, though specific financial figures were not disclosed. The firm’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to evolving within the financial markets while adapting to changes in trading environments.
