WEMIX Freezes Bridges Following $5.23 Million Breach

On July 26, 2026, WEMIX confirmed a significant security breach that allowed an attacker to gain control of owner privileges associated with its WEMIX$ stablecoin contract. This unauthorized access led to the minting of approximately 5.23 million WEMIX$, prompting the company to take decisive action.

Incident Details

The attacker exploited compromised owner privileges, enabling them to create new tokens without approval and transfer assets across various blockchain networks. Following the breach, WEMIX suspended its bridges, liquidity pools, and related services while exchanges worked to trace and freeze the suspected stolen funds. Initial reports suggested a total financial impact of around $6.25 million, but WEMIX later specified that about 5,225,525 WEMIX$ had been minted.

Response and Investigation

WEMIX paused all services tied to the WEMIX3.0 network, including the Chainlink CCIP and the PLAY Bridge. The company also halted trading in affected liquidity pools and stopped operations for the WEMIX$ Module and PNIX decentralized exchange.

As the incident unfolded, WEMIX began tracing the transactions with the assistance of blockchain security firms and alerted exchanges to freeze suspected wallets. The company reported that several exchanges complied with this request, but did not disclose the specific exchanges involved or the amount of frozen funds.

Impact on WEMIX$ and Future Plans

This breach occurred amid WEMIX’s transition from WEMIX$ to USDC.e in its gaming and financial services. Following the event, the stablecoin’s value dropped significantly, experiencing a decline of about 98.9% as trading resumed, reflecting investors’ concerns over the incident.

WEMIX stated that the cause of the breach was still under investigation, with ongoing efforts to analyze the situation and determine how the attacker gained control of the owner credentials. The company has promised further updates as more information becomes available.

Historical Context

This recent breach is not the first security incident for WEMIX. In February 2025, the company experienced a different breach where approximately 8.6 million WEMIX tokens were stolen. Following that incident, major South Korean exchanges subsequently delisted WEMIX due to concerns over security protocols.

As WEMIX navigates this challenging situation, it remains focused on tracing the stolen assets and ensuring the integrity of its platform moving forward.
