UK Lawmakers Scrutinize Major Banks Over Crypto Account Restrictions

UK Lawmakers Scrutinize Banking Access for Crypto Businesses

UK Parliament has initiated inquiries into how major British banks handle accounts for cryptocurrency businesses and related payments. This oversight comes as concerns mount that existing banking restrictions may hinder sector growth ahead of the regulatory regime scheduled for implementation in 2027.

Request for Bank Accountability

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Crypto and Digital Assets (APPG) has contacted the chief executives of prominent banks including HSBC, NatWest, Monzo, Nationwide, and others, requesting detailed disclosures about their current practices regarding crypto firms. The APPG has emphasized that access to banking services might represent “one of the single biggest barriers to growth” for UK-based crypto enterprises.

Restrictions and Barriers

Reportedly, banks like HSBC and NatWest have imposed transaction caps on transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges, limiting amounts to between £5,000 and £10,000. In contrast, Starling and Chase UK have altogether prohibited such transactions. The APPG is collecting evidence until August 31, with the aim of assessing whether banking limitations are disproportionate in relation to the risks associated with the digital asset sector.

Inquiry Timeline and Implications

The inquiry was officially launched on July 21 and aims to discern the underlying reasons behind banks’ decisions to deny or restrict accounts for crypto businesses. Additionally, the lawmakers have inquired what changes might arise from the forthcoming regulatory framework to be enforced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which will become effective on October 25, 2027.

Assessing Financial Crime and Consumer Protection

While banks underscore the necessity of guarding against financial crime, the APPG’s inquiry aims to explore whether current banking practices are unduly damaging to legitimate crypto firms. Lawmakers hope to understand better how banks can balance the imperatives of consumer protection and the operational needs of innovation in the digital asset space.

Future of Crypto in the UK

The future regulatory environment for cryptocurrency businesses in the UK is set to shift significantly as firms prepare for the FCA’s new authorization requirements. The framework will encompass trading activities, custody services, and market conduct, emphasizing the need for compliance among businesses hoping to operate in the UK.

This scrutiny follows a broader pattern of similar complaints and regulatory pressures observed in the United States, where crypto entities also face banking restrictions.
