Twenty One Capital Reports $413.5 Million Loss Amid Bitcoin Decline

Twenty One Capital Reports Major Financial Loss

Tether-backed company Twenty One Capital has disclosed a significant net loss of $413.5 million for the second quarter of 2026. This financial downturn is largely attributed to a decline in Bitcoin valuations, which negatively impacted the value of its holdings.

Impact of Bitcoin Valuations

The recent financial report from Twenty One Capital indicates that a substantial loss of $401.5 million in Bitcoin valuations was responsible for the majority of the quarterly deficit. This valuation loss accounted for approximately 97% of the total loss incurred during this period. The remaining loss of around $12 million is attributed to expenses, although a detailed breakdown was not provided.

Continued Challenges and Previous Losses

This loss follows a similar trend observed in the company’s first quarter, where Twenty One Capital reported a net loss of $859.7 million. An $847.8 million decline in the value of its Bitcoin holdings was also the primary driver behind that loss. Over the first two quarters of 2026, the company has faced total reported losses nearing $1.27 billion, with nearly $1.25 billion attributed to the falling value of Bitcoin.

Strategic Shifts Under New Leadership

In light of these challenges, CEO Raphael Zagury has indicated that Twenty One Capital must diversify beyond merely holding Bitcoin. His strategy includes pursuing acquisitions, enhancing capital markets services, and offering Bitcoin-backed loans. Zagury took over on July 20, succeeding Jack Mallers, who is now focused on his role with Strike.

Future Growth Initiatives

Zagury plans to build an operational framework around the substantial Bitcoin reserves held by the company, emphasizing discipline and governance. As part of this effort, Twenty One Capital aims to develop a strategy around five key priorities, including Bitcoin financial services and managing its Bitcoin holdings through various financial transactions.

Background and Governance Issues

Twenty One Capital, which operates on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XXI, offers investors a way to gain exposure to Bitcoin through a public company structure. However, investors face numerous risks associated with both Bitcoin fluctuations and the company’s operational decisions.

Recently, governance concerns emerged following Tether’s increased control after acquiring SoftBank’s interest in the company, leading to questions about the independence of its board. The NYSE had issued a warning regarding compliance with audit committee independence rules, which the company has since addressed by appointing an independent director.
