Trump Urges Exxon and Chevron to Lower Fuel Prices Following Record Profits

President Donald Trump has criticized oil majors ExxonMobil and Chevron for their substantial profits amid rising fuel prices, urging them to pass some of their gains back to consumers. This plea comes after Exxon reported earnings of $14.5 billion and Chevron $12.1 billion, resulting in a combined profit of $26.5 billion for the second quarter of 2026.

Record Earnings and Rising Gas Prices

ExxonMobil’s earnings more than doubled from the same quarter last year, while Chevron’s profits increased nearly fivefold. Trump expressed his discontent at a White House briefing, stating, “They’re making too much money based on a shortage. I don’t like it. They ought to give some of that back to the public.” His statements marked a rare reproach towards companies generally supported by his administration for their roles in increased U.S. oil production.

Impact of the Iran War

The ongoing conflict with Iran has been cited as a primary factor for the increase in fuel prices, which have surged over 30% since military actions began. Trump emphasized that the pricing pressures were linked to insufficient supply resulting from the crisis in Iran, where West Texas Intermediate crude prices reached highs of $109.64 per barrel during the quarter.

Trump’s Position on Oil Companies

Additionally, Trump called out Chevron’s CEO, Mike Wirth, for not sufficiently acknowledging the administration’s support of the company’s operations in Venezuela amidst these tumultuous times. The President reiterated that both oil firms should help alleviate the financial burden on consumers by lowering retail fuel prices.

Industry Response and Market Trends

The American Petroleum Institute defended the profits, pointing out that retail gasoline prices are primarily influenced by global market dynamics rather than decisions made by individual companies. Factors such as crude oil costs, refining margins, distribution expenses, and taxes contribute significantly to the pricing consumers face at the pump.

In response to Trump’s comments about resolution in Iran leading to potential price reductions, oil prices dropped following his announcement of paused strikes against Iran and hints at reopening diplomatic negotiations, leading to a more optimistic outlook for the market.

With the midterm elections approaching and household budgets under strain due to higher gasoline prices, Trump’s call for action from Exxon and Chevron is likely to resonate with many Americans facing rising costs.
