Trump Supports UK-US Stablecoin Framework Amid CLARITY Act Opposition

President Donald Trump has expressed strong backing for a newly established UK-US stablecoin framework, as the Senate works to advance the CLARITY Act amidst increasing challenges from banking groups regarding its stablecoin provisions.

Joint Standards for Regulated Stablecoins

The United Kingdom and the United States have communicated their agreement on common standards for stablecoins, aimed at enhancing cross-border finance and protecting customers. According to a joint statement released through the Transatlantic Taskforce for Markets of the Future, both governments acknowledge that well-regulated stablecoins can facilitate improved cross-border payments, enhance market infrastructure, and promote competition.

Formed in September 2025, the task force outlined that regulated stablecoins ought to be backed one-to-one by high-quality liquid reserve assets that comply with each nation’s legal structure. Furthermore, the joint statement emphasized expectations for stablecoins to be used as currency, including the need for issuers to provide clear custody arrangements and timely redemption options for token holders.

Banking Groups Express Concerns

As the Senate pushes forward with the CLARITY Act, Trump continues urging its passage before the upcoming August recess. The Act remains a focal point in Washington’s crypto legislation, although it faces scrutiny from major banking organizations. These groups warn that ambiguous stablecoin regulations could lead to significant deposit outflows from smaller banks, which rely heavily on customer deposits for lending.

Banking representatives have called for lawmakers to clarify certain provisions of the Act and implement stronger safeguards to protect the banking system from potential instability driven by shifts toward stablecoins.

Future of Stablecoins and Regulations

While the joint UK-US position does not directly address the banking sector’s concerns, it highlights critical customer protections and the legal treatment of stablecoin assets that could influence ongoing developments in the CLARITY Act. As both nations work to create cohesive regulatory frameworks, the outcome of the Act will play a significant role in shaping the future of stablecoins within the global financial landscape.
