Tether’s US-Regulated Stablecoin Sees Explosive Growth Yet Remains Small

Tether’s US-Regulated Stablecoin Sees Explosive Growth Yet Remains Small

Tether’s US-regulated stablecoin, known as USAT, achieved a remarkable growth of 540% within a month, surging from $22 million to $140.8 million. Despite this impressive increase, USAT now comprises just 0.08% of Tether’s larger stablecoin, USDT, highlighting the disparity in size between the two.

USAT’s Unique Corporate Structure

Launched in January with an initial supply of $10 million, USAT’s growth trajectory outpaced other regulated dollar tokens this year. As of the end of April, a reserve report signed by Deloitte confirmed the total supply reached $140.8 million. Within its first week, it showed significant growth, with reserves reported at $17.6 million.

This rapid ascent is notable given that USDT experienced a contraction during the same period, falling from near $190 billion to approximately $184 billion – a reduction of about $6 billion. Such fluctuations illustrate an unusual dynamic within the stablecoin market.

Contextualizing USAT’s Market Position

While USAT has showcased rapid growth, it remains small compared to its competitors. For example, Circle’s USDC holds around $75 billion, and PayPal’s PYUSD is valued at about $5.5 billion. In this environment, USAT ranks as the smallest in the regulated dollar token market, comprising only roughly 2.5% of PYUSD and under 0.2% of Circle’s USDC.

Compliance and Regulatory Framework

The structure of USAT is noteworthy as it is issued through a federally chartered bank, Anchorage Digital Bank, and was designed to comply with emerging U.S. regulatory standards for stablecoins. This contrasts sharply with Tether’s parent company, which operates outside such frameworks. USAT’s strong compliance focus is underscored by its regular audits as opposed to the attestations that USDT relies on.

Future Implications for Tether

As Tether navigates a rapidly evolving regulatory environment, the existence of USAT may serve as a strategic hedge against potential regulatory changes that could affect its offshore operations. The growth of USAT indicates an interest from institutions for a compliant dollar token, which could signal future demand shifts within the stablecoin market.

Ultimately, while USAT’s growth is promising, assessing its long-term viability will depend on how well it attracts institutional interest and adapts to the broader stablecoin landscape.
