Strategy Reports $8.2 Billion Loss Amid Bitcoin Price Drop

Strategy Posts Significant Loss Due to Bitcoin Price Decline

Strategy, known as the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, announced a staggering $8.2 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2026, primarily resulting from a marked decline in the price of the cryptocurrency. This loss was mainly attributed to an $8.32 billion unrealized markdown on its bitcoin assets, recorded under fair-value accounting.

Bitcoin Holdings and Financial Developments

As of July 26, 2026, Strategy held approximately 843,775 bitcoin, reflecting a 25% increase since the start of the year. However, the current market value of these holdings stands at roughly $54.8 billion, significantly lower than the acquisition cost of $63.7 billion.

In light of growing investor concerns regarding its capital structure, the company has built a cash reserve totaling $3.75 billion, sufficient to cover more than two years’ worth of dividend payments. This reserve was strengthened following various financial maneuvers, including the raising of $17.06 billion through stock offerings this year and repurchasing $1.5 billion of convertible notes.

New Financial Strategies Amid Market Challenges

To adapt to the changing market environment, Strategy has introduced a new BTC Monetization Program, through which the firm sold about $218.4 million worth of bitcoin. This marks a shift from its previous strategy of solely accumulating bitcoin without selling any portions to maintain liquidity for preferred stock dividends.

Company’s Future Direction

Despite the challenges posed by the current market conditions, Strategy’s Executive Chairman, Michael Saylor, stated the company remains focused on evolving its business model. Saylor emphasized the intention to establish its “Digital Credit” business as a new asset class in the context of fluctuating bitcoin values.

As part of its ongoing financial strategy, Strategy has initiated a $1 billion share repurchase program, although it has not yet executed any buybacks. Additionally, it repurchased around $25 million of its preferred shares at a discount and intends to continue these repurchases while shares are undervalued.
