South Korean Police Raid Former Mayor’s Home in Crypto Investigation

Police Conduct Raid on Former Mayor Over Crypto Disclosure Allegations

South Korean police have launched an investigation into allegations that former Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok failed to disclose cryptocurrency assets during his local election financial filings. In a significant move, authorities executed search warrants at both Yoo’s residence and city offices on July 28, 2026.

The inquiry is focused on claims that approximately 21,000 cryptocurrency tokens were omitted from mandatory asset declarations. According to previous reports, Yoo’s declared assets were off by around 78 million won when compared to his actual holdings.

Details of the Investigation

The search operations, conducted by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit, aimed to gather evidence relevant to the alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act. Items such as mobile phones and computers were collected during the searches.

Investigators have already interviewed Yoo, his wife – who is known only by her surname, Choi – and other individuals associated with the complaint filed by Park Chan-dae’s campaign, which sparked the investigation about ten days before the election.

Background on the Allegations

The complaint suggested that Yoo and Choi intentionally failed to report their cryptocurrency tokens after transferring these assets to an overseas exchange prior to submitting their financial disclosures for South Korea’s June 3 local elections. Subsequent investigations by the Incheon City Election Commission led to a referral to law enforcement due to potential election law violations.

On June 2, the day before the election, the election commission noted discrepancies in Yoo’s reported assets, which raised further questions about the accuracy of his disclosures.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Implications

The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining whether the omission of the cryptocurrency holdings was deliberate. Elections in South Korea mandate candidates to disclose their assets, and failures to do so can lead to serious legal repercussions if deemed intentional.

Although the specific cryptocurrency involved has not been disclosed, the case underscores the increasing scrutiny of digital assets within the political landscape in South Korea. This follows a pattern of investigations relating to cryptocurrency disclosures among public officials, which have become a point of contention in recent months.
