Shiba Inu Jumps 36% Amid Mystery Korean Trading Surge
Shiba Inu Sees 36% Surge
Shiba Inu (SHIB) experienced an impressive surge of approximately 36%, reaching a trading value of $0.0000057 on Sunday. This rise added roughly $1 billion to its market capitalization, bringing it close to $3.4 billion.
Trading Volume and Market Activity
The notable increase in SHIB’s value occurred without any clear announcements or fundamental catalysts. Daily trading volume reached around $380 million, which is the highest turnover seen in months. While the broader category of dog-themed tokens, such as Dogecoin, has seen only modest increases – 6% for Dogecoin over the same period – Shiba Inu’s spike stands out.
South Korean Influence
The surge has been attributed primarily to trading activity on South Korean exchanges. The SHIB/KRW trading pair on Upbit accounts for about $62 million, which is more than a tenth of the total global SHIB trading volume, indicating significant regional interest. South Korean traders are known for driving volatile market movements, and the trading activity surrounding SHIB aligns with this pattern.
Market Dynamics and Short Liquidations
Interestingly, around $6 million in SHIB short positions were liquidated as the price rose, but this activity did not appear to drive the rally. Approximately $5 million of these liquidations came from short positions across about 2,300 traders. This suggests that the cause of the price increase remains unclear, as liquidations of this magnitude typically do not trigger such significant price movement.
Background of Shiba Inu
Launched in August 2020, Shiba Inu was created as an Ethereum token by an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi and marketed as a “Dogecoin killer.” Although the project has developed a layer-2 network called Shibarium and expanded its token ecosystem, SHIB’s trading behavior is largely dictated by retail sentiment rather than underlying product developments.
