SBI Launches Canton Network Unit, Expands Blockchain Strategy

SBI Launches Canton Network Unit Amid Blockchain Expansion

SBI Holdings has announced a significant restructuring of its operations, establishing a dedicated subsidiary for the Canton Network. This move, effective June 22, is intended to broaden SBI’s institutional blockchain strategy beyond its existing partnership with Ripple and the XRP Ledger.

New Subsidiary Focuses on Canton Network

The newly formed unit, named SBI Digital Practice Co. Ltd., will specialize in developing financial infrastructure and applications utilizing the Canton Network. This network reportedly connects over 600 institutions and manages assets exceeding $6 trillion. The restructuring aligns with SBI’s vision to enhance its blockchain services, which include work on XRP Ledger, stablecoins, and tokenized securities.

Canton Network’s Role in U.S. Market

SBI’s link to the Canton Network offers a direct connection to the U.S. market, particularly through its involvement with tokenized U.S. Treasuries. The firm has stated that it anticipates increased adoption of financial products on blockchain networks as financial institutions seek to comply with regulatory frameworks.

Management and Operational Changes

Based in Roppongi, Tokyo, RBI Digital Practice Co. Ltd. is led by representative director Ryo Shimotsu. The subsidiary aims to support institutions in implementing blockchain technology while ensuring compliance with local regulations across various markets.

Broader Blockchain Strategy

Importantly, SBI’s restructuring does not indicate a withdrawal from its partnership with Ripple. The partnership, which began in 2016 with the establishment of SBI Ripple Asia, continues to thrive, focusing on developing payment infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region.

Recent Collaborations and Developments

As part of its multichain strategy, SBI has recently engaged in various tokenization initiatives. In July, it partnered with DigiFT to launch the SBI Japan High Dividend Equity Strategy Token on Solana, aimed at eligible institutional investors. Additionally, a partnership with Ondo Finance aims to tokenize Japanese equities, utilizing SBI’s yen-backed JPYSC stablecoin for transactions.

Tokenization of U.S. Treasuries

The Canton Network also includes major financial players such as Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, and Franklin Templeton, among others. Notably, a recent transaction involved an on-chain U.S. Treasury settled through Canton, further bridging SBI’s offerings with U.S. financial markets.

While SBI has not disclosed specific customer details or revenue targets for its new unit, the restructuring aligns with the expansion of its institutional digital asset strategy, including its partnerships with Ripple, Solana, Ondo, JPYSC, and Coinhako.
