Ripple Gains EU-Wide Access as ESMA Includes It in MiCA Register
Ripple Gains EU-Wide Access
Ripple Payments Europe has officially secured authorization to operate across 29 EU countries after being added to the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) latest MiCA register. This update includes Ripple and 14 other companies, bringing the total number of approved crypto asset service providers (CASPs) on the register to 294.
Regulatory Approval for Ripple
This recent authorization allows Ripple to provide regulated crypto services throughout the European Economic Area. Previously, it obtained approval in Luxembourg under the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework, which permits its European operations to serve financial institutions and businesses in the region. Coupled with an existing electronic money institution license in Luxembourg, this new CASP status enables Ripple to offer crypto asset payment services, including stablecoin transactions.
ESMA’s Update and Industry Impact
In addition to Ripple, ESMA’s update has included firms such as Bison Bank from Portugal, Hrvatska poštanska banka from Croatia, and Kaiser Partner Privatbank from Liechtenstein. Their addition highlights that traditional banks are increasingly seeking to offer digital asset services as part of their operations under MiCA regulations. Moreover, payment processor BitPay has also received MiCA authorization from the Dutch financial regulator, facilitating its provision of crypto and stablecoin services.
Challenges Under MiCA Implementation
As the MiCA transition period concluded on July 1, the regulatory landscape has become more stringent. Companies that failed to obtain authorization by this deadline are now required to cease offering regulated services in EU markets without specific national allowances. Bruna Szego, chair of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA), stressed the increased compliance challenges for authorized providers as they handle a potential influx of customers migrating from non-compliant firms.
Looking Ahead
Ripple’s recent registration signifies its expansion within the regulated digital payments landscape across Europe. The company, which has also received regulatory recognition from the UK Financial Conduct Authority, is positioned to leverage its licenses to facilitate a range of payment services involving crypto assets, including uses of XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin, depending on client needs.
