Prediction Markets Set New Record with $50.6 Billion in July

In July, prediction markets achieved a remarkable $50.59 billion in combined monthly trading volume, marking an all-time high across notable platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket. This data was revealed on August 3, showing a 7.8% increase from June’s revised total of $46.95 billion.

Kalshi Leads the Pack

Kalshi dominated the market this past month, contributing approximately $37.7 billion to the total volume. Similarly, Polymarket US saw an impressive 54% surge in volume, reaching $5 billion in July. Despite this growth, Polymarket’s international platform experienced a decline, with volumes dropping 26% to $7.9 billion, leading the combined volumes of both Polymarket platforms to fall from about $14 billion in June to $12.9 billion.

Understanding the Volume Metrics

The volumes recorded represent taker notional trading, which indicates contract turnover rather than revenue or actual funds deposited by users. Traders may repeatedly buy and sell the same contract before settlement, thus inflating recorded volumes without reflecting new capital contributions.

Impact of the FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup played a significant role in boosting July’s trading activity, particularly with Kalshi’s market for the final match garnering an estimated $1.89 billion in volume. This sporting event resulted in approximately $20 billion in blockchain prediction markets from the start of the year until the tournament concluded.

Open Interest and Future Outlook

Despite the record volume, open interest across the platforms decreased from around $2 billion at the start of July to approximately $1.2 billion by month-end, indicating a reduction in active positions as the World Cup finished.

The trading figures hit a record amidst ongoing regulatory challenges, particularly in New York and Minnesota. New York has initiated legal action against Kalshi, alleging it operates an unlicensed gambling service. In contrast, a recent Minnesota federal court ruling allows Kalshi and Polymarket US to continue functioning while awaiting further clarifications on regulatory boundaries.

Looking Ahead

As August begins, the industry watches closely to determine if the momentum in trading volumes can be maintained beyond the World Cup, particularly regarding sports, political, and economic contracts.
