Prediction Markets Surpass Traditional Sportsbooks with $50 Billion World Cup Volume
Prediction Markets Achieve Record Volume During World Cup
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup unfolds, prediction markets have topped $50 billion in monthly trading volume, significantly challenging traditional sportsbooks in the process. This surge marks a revolutionary shift in the sports betting landscape, particularly in the United States.
Massive Gains for Leading Platforms
Prediction market platforms including Kalshi, Polymarket, and Rothera have reported unprecedented trading volumes. Specifically, Kalshi achieved a staggering $31 billion in total notional trading volume in June, reflecting an increase of over 70% compared to May, with around 85% of this volume attributed to sports contracts. Of this amount, Kalshi noted that World Cup-specific trading reached $22.42 billion.
Polymarket, on the other hand, reported a combined monthly trading volume of $10.8 billion on its international exchange, while its regulated U.S. platform saw $3.5 billion, nearly double its May figures. Rothera, recently launched by Robinhood and Susquehanna International Group, processed $2 billion during its debut month, holding 7% of the U.S. prediction market share.
Contrast with Traditional Sportsbooks
Meanwhile, traditional sportsbooks in the U.S. are projected to handle between $2.8 billion and $4.3 billion during the entirety of the tournament. In comparison, Kalshi’s World Cup-specific markets alone generated an impressive $7.4 billion in June.
Changing User Demographics
The emergence of prediction markets also appears to be appealing to a broader demographic. For instance, Kalshi experienced a remarkable 106% growth in female users during the tournament, while the overall user base has been expanding rapidly. Kalshi’s partnership with FIFA, which included branding rights and media distribution deals, also highlighted its increasing visibility during the event.
Shifting Trends in Betting Preferences
Interestingly, user engagement has shown a notable shift. Data indicated that while traditional sportsbook apps experienced early spikes, their user engagement subsequently declined, in contrast to the growth of prediction market platforms. Kalshi and Polymarket captured 78.5% of new betting app installs among major platforms in June, an increase from a mere 6% just a year prior.
Looking Ahead in the Betting Industry
As the tournament progresses, operators are witnessing substantial interest across the board, with anecdotal evidence suggesting record-breaking betting activity on major U.S. sportsbooks. Despite this, the rapid rise and establishment of prediction markets signify a potential shift in how sports betting is conducted, paving the way for their recognition as serious contenders in the industry.
