Majority of Prediction Market Users Report Significant Losses in US Survey

Survey Highlights High Loss Rates Among Prediction Market Users

A recent survey conducted in the United States has revealed troubling statistics regarding prediction market users, indicating that 79% of participants reported losing money over the past year. The survey, which involved 1,000 adults, highlights the financial risks associated with engaging in these markets.

Borrowing and Loss Rates

Among users who engaged in prediction markets such as Kalshi, Polymarket, or PredictIt, the findings showed that 51% had used borrowed funds to place their bets. The loss rates were starkly higher among this group, with 88% of borrowers reporting losses, compared to 69% of non-borrowers. Notably, 27% of all users reported losses exceeding $500, with 9% losing over $1,000.

Motivations Behind Participation

Participants provided insight into their motivations for using prediction markets, with 53% indicating they joined primarily for income-related reasons, including 44% hoping to earn extra money and 9% facing financial struggles. Only 27% claimed to be driven by entertainment or curiosity.

Expert Warnings on Borrowing to Bet

Consumer finance expert Erica Sandberg cautioned against the risks of borrowing money to finance bets on prediction markets. She stated, “Although tempting, borrowing money to place a bet is a universally bad idea,” emphasizing the added financial burdens that can occur as a result of debt repayment after losing bets.

Regulatory Environment and Market Growth

The survey comes as prediction markets have seen a substantial increase in trading activity. In July, platforms reported a combined trading volume of $50.59 billion, reflecting continued interest despite rising scrutiny from regulators concerning the need for customer protection.

Understanding User Experiences

The study illustrates that while a significant number of users are drawn to prediction markets hoping to improve their financial situations, the reality depicts a landscape where many face losses. Furthermore, trends indicate that engagement varies by gender, with 24% of men and just 9% of women stating they had tried a prediction market platform.
