POSCO International Tokenizes Receivables on Blockchain with LG CNS
POSCO International Initiates Blockchain Receivables Tokenization
POSCO International, one of South Korea’s largest trading companies, is testing the integration of blockchain technology into its financial operations by tokenizing trade receivables. This pilot project, conducted in partnership with LG CNS, aims to streamline and accelerate payment processes between its global subsidiaries.
Adopting Blockchain for Trade Receivables
The initiative employs the Injective blockchain, enabling POSCO to tokenize live commercial invoices generated from actual trading activities, as opposed to simulated transactions. By moving trade receivables onto a shared blockchain ledger, the companies can establish a single, compliant record for these financial claims. Typically, trade receivables are tracked separately by buyers, sellers, and banks, a process that can delay the cash flow due to lengthy reconciliations.
Significance of the Pilot Program
A spokesperson from POSCO International highlighted the significance of this Proof of Concept (PoC), stating, “This PoC is significant in that it validated the applicability of AI and blockchain technology based on real trade data and processes.” The firm plans to expand the project into live production following the successful completion of this trial.
Market Context and Future Potential
The recent surge in focus on tokenization within the finance sector has primarily centered around funds and equities. Notable asset managers have adopted blockchain for various financial instruments, facilitating efficiency in issuance and settlement. The market for tokenized assets has notably expanded, with estimates projecting it could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030.
Beyond funds, trade finance emerges as a promising area for blockchain implementation. By leveraging tokenization, companies can enhance the efficiency of working capital management and provide banks with a unified view of these financial obligations. South Korea is increasingly recognized as a leader in corporate blockchain adoption, as evidenced by multiple initiatives, including Hyundai’s recent use of stablecoins for internal transactions.
Looking Ahead
With the trial on the Injective platform, POSCO and LG CNS are positioned to pioneer advancements in global trade finance. Previously, LG CNS has collaborated on various blockchain projects, including the Bank of Korea’s central bank digital currency pilot, adding credibility to its role in this new phase of financial technology.
