Polymarket Implements Time-Weighted Pricing to Combat Manipulation

Polymarket Adjusts Pricing Strategy to Address Manipulation Concerns

Polymarket has initiated a significant change in its pricing structure, moving from single-price snapshots to time-weighted average prices (TWAP) for its short-dated crypto markets. This decision comes after months of trader complaints and extensive research that highlighted manipulative practices among traders.

Background of the Change

The platform identified that 821 accounts had generated $8.2 million in profit during potentially manipulated settlement windows. Critics pointed out that Polymarket’s existing rules were allowing a small group of traders to unfairly benefit at the expense of others.

In a recent update, Polymarket stated, “To protect market integrity in our crypto up/down markets, we’re updating how these markets resolve.” Additionally, it announced the introduction of $1 million in liquidity rewards across affected markets for August.

Details of the New Pricing Model

The new model specifies that five-minute markets will utilize a 30-second average, while 15-minute and four-hour markets will operate on a 60-second average. Data from these markets will utilize Chainlink Data Streams, ensuring streamlined and secure data delivery.

Investigation Findings and Trading Behavior

Research conducted by teams from Stanford University and Singapore Management University revealed concerning patterns in trading behaviors, notably large orders placed on Binance just before market settlements followed by rapid price alterations. While this study did not unequivocally prove intentional manipulation, it indicated that 93% of losses during identified manipulated periods primarily affected retail traders.

Community Responses and Broader Market Implications

Prior to the recent changes, several analysts, including Variance Lover and others, raised alarms regarding the manipulative strategies being exploited on Polymarket’s five-minute contracts. Some community members reported observing precise price reversals occurring within seconds of the settlement period.

In contrast, Kalshi, another prediction market platform, claims to have a more robust structure against similar vulnerabilities, utilizing regulated price indices and mandatory identity verification for its traders. Their spokesperson noted that while offshore markets can still exert influence, their moving average system complicates price manipulation efforts.

This shift by Polymarket indicates a proactive approach in the evolving landscape of prediction markets, aiming to bolster the integrity of its trading environment while enhancing user trust.
