Paradigm Contributes $470 Million to Antares Nuclear Funding
In a significant investment move, Paradigm has led a $470 million funding round for the nuclear startup Antares Nuclear, marking a continued expansion into military-focused small modular reactors (SMRs). This funding initiative aligns with Paradigm’s broader strategy to invest in frontier technologies beyond the traditional scope of cryptocurrency.
Funding Structure and Participants
As part of this funding round, which reportedly consists of $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt, Paradigm is joined by Caffeinated Capital, which co-led the round, in addition to participation from Industrious Ventures, Point72 Ventures, and Shine Capital. This investment comes shortly after Paradigm launched its $1.2 billion fourth fund, which aims to support innovations across various sectors, including artificial intelligence and robotics.
Antares Nuclear’s Plans
Antares Nuclear is poised to deploy its first electricity-producing small modular reactor by next year, with plans to target U.S. military bases for deployments starting in 2028. The company, which is engaged in the Pentagon’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, aims to provide a reliable energy source tailored for military applications.
Technological Advancements
The startup has developed a small modular reactor capable of generating between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt of electricity, sufficient to power approximately 750 homes. Recently, its demonstration reactor, marked as Mark-0, achieved criticality at the Idaho National Laboratory, indicating a controlled nuclear chain reaction.
Growing Interest in Advanced Nuclear Technology
Investment in advanced nuclear technology is surging, driven by increased demand for reliable power sources to support not just military operations but also expanding AI infrastructure. Notable recent funding activities include companies like X-energy, which completed a $1 billion IPO, and several others that have secured substantial investments exceeding $100 million.
Challenges Ahead for Commercial Deployment
Despite heightened investment activity, the commercial deployment of SMRs encounters several obstacles, such as limited domestic supply chains and the challenges of scaling manufacturing. It is anticipated that while factory-built reactors could eventually reduce production costs, tangible benefits may take years to materialize. Current analyses suggest that electricity from first-generation SMRs could cost around $214 per megawatt-hour, which is higher than most newly constructed power plants.
