Morgan Stanley Launches Ethereum and Solana Exchange-Traded Products

Morgan Stanley Launches Ethereum and Solana Exchange-Traded Products

Morgan Stanley Investment Management has officially announced the launch of the Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust and Morgan Stanley Solana Trust, marking a significant expansion of its digital asset offerings beyond Bitcoin. These products began trading on NYSE Arca under the tickers MSSE for Ethereum and MSOL for Solana.

Details of the New Products

Both MSSE and MSOL have an annual management fee of 0.14%, making them some of the lowest-cost exchange-traded products available for crypto in the United States. Unlike standard ETFs, Morgan Stanley classifies these offerings as exchange-traded products, which hold the respective digital assets while allowing investors to gain exposure without the need to manage wallets or private keys.

Staking and Potential Returns

The newly launched products allow for staking, letting them earn blockchain rewards by committing a portion of their holdings to validate transactions on the network. Regulatory filings indicate that MSSE plans to stake between 50% and 80% of its Ether, while MSOL may stake up to 100% of its Solana holdings. Providers such as Figment and Coinbase Canada are designated staking partners, and service providers may retain up to 5% of the staking rewards, with the remainder going to the funds.

Market Context and Strategic Positioning

The launch occurs at a time of mixed flows in the crypto ETF market, amidst broader market fluctuations. Bitcoin ETFs have experienced periods of net outflows, while Ethereum and Solana products have shown more resilience. With this launch, Morgan Stanley becomes the first asset manager affiliated with a U.S. bank to offer Ethereum and Solana products, providing investors with regulated pathways to enter the crypto space.

Broader Digital Asset Initiatives

Morgan Stanley had previously entered the crypto market with the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust, labeled MSBT, which as of late July had about $392 million in assets. The bank is also enhancing digital asset access for customers via its partnership with E*TRADE, allowing transactions in major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

Future Implications

This strategic move may place additional fee pressure on the U.S. crypto fund market, as Morgan Stanley’s competitive pricing aims to attract investors from established competitors. The initial response to MSSE and MSOL will reveal the effectiveness of Morgan Stanley’s brand and fee structure in drawing interest in this challenging market environment.
