Morgan Stanley Boosts BlackRock Bitcoin ETF Position by 23%
Morgan Stanley Increases Stake in BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF
Morgan Stanley has raised its stake in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust by 23%, bringing its total holdings to approximately 16.5 million shares. This increase was part of their broader strategy to enhance exposure to various cryptocurrencies during the second quarter of the year.
Details of the Investment
As indicated in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dated August 11, Morgan Stanley added roughly 3.04 million shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust, which was valued at $549 million as of June 30. It is important to note that despite the increase in shares, the reported value of this position decreased by nearly 18% from approximately $667 million at the end of March, primarily due to a decline in Bitcoin’s price.
Expanded Crypto Exposure
Additionally, Morgan Stanley’s holdings in BlackRock’s Ether ETF grew by 202%, amounting to about 4.6 million shares. They further solidified their position in the crypto market by introducing new investments in their own Bitcoin fund and two products focused on Solana.
Launch of New Products
In line with their growing crypto strategy, Morgan Stanley launched the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust on April 8, which trades on NYSE Arca. This Bitcoin fund holds Bitcoin directly and carries an annual management fee of 0.14%, which is lower than the fees associated with other major Bitcoin funds.
Further Developments
Alongside increasing holdings in Bitcoin-related investments, Morgan Stanley also saw significant growth in its position in Circle Internet Group, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, with reported shares expanding from approximately 1.46 million to about 8.32 million by the end of Q2. Moreover, the bank has also been investing in several Bitcoin mining and digital infrastructure companies.
Market Fluctuations and Adjustments
While many of Morgan Stanley’s crypto holdings increased, there were decreases in positions such as Coinbase and CleanSpark, with a notable reduction in Coinbase shares, reflecting adjustments amidst the ongoing volatility in the crypto market.
