MoneyGram Launches Crypto-to-Cash Service on Solana
MoneyGram has officially expanded its cash-to-crypto service, known as MoneyGram Ramps, to the Solana blockchain. This new offering allows wallets, exchanges, and developers operating on Solana to seamlessly connect to MoneyGram’s extensive global cash network.
Service Features
The MoneyGram Ramps service enables users to convert cash into digital assets or withdraw cash from supported crypto wallets using MoneyGram’s payment network. This means individuals holding cryptocurrency in specific wallets can now easily translate these digital assets into local currency and vice versa. The service supports cash deposits in over 25 countries and withdrawals across more than 170 countries and territories.
The Shift to Blockchain Payments
This expansion comes at a time when the use of stablecoins as a medium for payments and remittances is on the rise. Financial technology companies and banks are increasingly leveraging dollar-pegged tokens to facilitate cross-border transactions, thereby reducing reliance on traditional banking infrastructures.
MoneyGram, catering to approximately 60 million active customers, sees the integration of blockchain technology as a pathway to enhance the speed, cost-efficiency, and transparency of cross-border transfers. The company aims to simplify access to digital currencies for everyday users, which is reflected in the vision behind MoneyGram Ramps.
“The future of payments is built on access,” said MoneyGram CEO Anthony Soohoo. “Bringing MoneyGram Ramps to Solana is another step toward building a truly open, global payments network.”
Prior Developments
MoneyGram’s foray into the crypto space has been underway for several years. In 2022, it partnered with the Stellar Development Foundation to facilitate transactions between cash and Circle’s USDC stablecoin via its retail network, providing physical points for crypto wallet users. Additionally, in June, the company announced MGUSD, its own dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Bridge, a stablecoin infrastructure firm owned by Stripe. MoneyGram has also increased its involvement with Solana by becoming a validator in June, aiding in the processing and securing of transactions on the network.
Conclusion
MoneyGram’s expansion into the Solana ecosystem marks a significant development in the integration of traditional financial services with cryptocurrency technology, aiming to make digital asset transactions more accessible to a broader audience.
