MARA Sells $1.63 Billion in Bitcoin Amid Treasury Reduction

MARA Sells $1.63 Billion in Bitcoin

MARA Holdings has sold approximately 23,093 Bitcoin for around $1.63 billion during the first half of 2026. This move was part of the company’s strategy to convert a substantial portion of its Bitcoin treasury into cash to support operations, investments, and liquidity requirements.

Current Bitcoin Holdings and Sales Strategy

As of June 30, 2026, MARA reported holding 35,577 Bitcoin valued at about $2.1 billion. The recent sales were part of an initiative to manage liquidity and fund growth opportunities. According to MARA’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Bitcoin was sold at an average price of $70,631. Furthermore, the company pledged 18,750 Bitcoin to secure $600 million in additional borrowing from Coinbase and Two Prime to enhance its financial capabilities.

Investing Cash and Infrastructure Developments

The $1.63 billion raised from Bitcoin sales marked MARA’s largest source of investing cash during the first half of the year. The filing indicated net cash from investing activities reached approximately $1.47 billion, significantly higher than the $337 million recorded in the same period in 2025. MARA utilized these proceeds to spend $94.3 million on property and equipment and $61.1 million for recent acquisitions.

Despite selling a large portion of its Bitcoin, operating activities resulted in cash consumption of $471.3 million, largely driven by increased operational costs and reduced revenues compared to the previous year.

Debt Reduction and Loan Strategies

In addition to selling Bitcoin, MARA has made efforts to reduce its debt significantly, bringing total debt down from $3.6 billion at year-end 2025 to approximately $2.4 billion by the end of June 2026. The company repurchased around $1 billion of its convertible senior notes and engaged in various loan arrangements using its remaining Bitcoin as collateral.

Upcoming Projects and Growth Plans

MARA’s strategy also involves enhancing its Bitcoin mining operations and investing in energy infrastructure. Part of the financing derived from its Bitcoin-backed borrowing is aimed at acquiring Long Ridge Energy & Power, a move that links its treasury management with expansion into energy and computing infrastructure, reflecting a comprehensive approach to asset utilization.

Market Impact and Future Outlook

As the company navigated a challenging financial landscape, with a reported net loss of $1.87 billion in the first half of 2026, it aims to balance its operational funding needs while adapting its asset management strategies to benefit from evolving market conditions.
