LayerZero and Keeta Enable Cross-Chain Tokenized Bank Deposits
New Tokenized Bank Deposits Hit Major Blockchains
In a significant development, LayerZero and Keeta have announced a partnership aimed at enabling the transfer of tokenized commercial bank deposits across notable blockchain networks including Ethereum, Solana, and Base, as well as the Keeta Network.
Keeta Stablecoins: The Future of Payment Solutions
The initiative will utilize Keeta Stablecoins, designed to represent commercial bank deposits backed by actual funds held through Bivo. This partnership marks a breakthrough, as it aims to allow financial institutions to transact with bank-backed digital currencies seamlessly across multiple public blockchains.
Launch and Supported Currencies
Scheduled for later in July 2026, the platform will initially support the U.S. dollar and eight additional fiat currencies: EUR, JPY, CNY, GBP, CAD, MXN, AED, and HKD. However, the specific launch date and the names of participating institutions have not yet been disclosed.
Technical Infrastructure and Compliance
LayerZero’s infrastructure will enable these tokens’ interoperability through its unique Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) Standard, allowing a single fungible token to exist across various chains while maintaining a unified supply. This model permits token transfers by deducting tokens from one network and crediting them to another, all while retaining compliance within the issuing institution.
Bivo’s Role and Regulatory Status
Bivo will play a crucial role by providing access to U.S. payment systems and a network of partner banks. Recognized as a licensed money transmitter, Bivo is compliant with relevant regulations, although details regarding deposit insurance for token holders have not been made clear.
Tokenization Landscape and Future Potential
The move to introduce tokenized deposits comes at a time when the concept is gaining traction in the financial sector. Major banks are exploring various models for tokenization, with some aiming for a bank-centric approach rather than a decentralized public blockchain framework. This initiative by LayerZero and Keeta, however, positions itself as a pioneering effort in facilitating the exchange of multiple fiat-aligned assets directly on major blockchain networks.
As the July launch approaches, the effectiveness of this approach in meeting institutional needs for tokenized bank money remains to be seen. Collaborating on a regulated framework for cross-chain transfers may redefine institutional finance in the digital era.
