JPYC Secures $38 Million Investment to Boost Stablecoin Growth in Japan
JPYC Raises $38 Million to Expand Stablecoin Ecosystem
JPYC, Japan’s first registered stablecoin, has successfully raised 6 billion yen (approximately $38 million) through an extended Series B funding round. This capital infusion is aimed at enhancing its payment network and Web3 financial services.
A New Strategic Investor
Among the notable backers, AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings has invested 1 billion yen (around $6.3 million) and plans to utilize JPYC to facilitate payments for approximately 2,300 business partners and contractors, including those in transportation.
AZ-COM Maruwa’s shift from outlining payment plans to becoming a strategic investor reflects its commitment to leveraging JPYC for enhancing payment processing. The logistics company seeks to implement fee-free stablecoin transactions, which could streamline payment processes for its partners and address labor shortages amid Japan’s demographic challenges.
Involvement in Pilot Projects
JPYC is actively participating in pilot projects to test stablecoin payments, partnering with convenience store chain Lawson. The project, which expands to include USDC and USDT alongside JPYC, is testing the use of stablecoins in actual retail environments.
Lawson’s efforts include trials set for August 6 at select locations, using the HashPort Wallet. A follow-up trial on August 17 will also permit payments through popular wallets such as MetaMask. Lawson is currently assessing various aspects, including integration and transaction speed, to gauge the suitability of stablecoin payments in broader store operations.
Metaplanet’s Continued Support
Investment firm Metaplanet has also supported JPYC beyond the current funding. It joined in a joint study with JPYC and others to explore the potential of using Bitcoin to back tokenized credit products, which could further innovate Japan’s financial landscape.
Growth of Japan’s Regulated Stablecoin Market
The fresh funding for JPYC coincides with a growing interest in regulated stablecoins within Japan, as various financial institutions test and develop blockchain-based payment systems. Notable developments include a yen-backed stablecoin from the SBI Group, which has entered the market recently.
With continued regulatory support and advances in digital asset legislation, Japan is positioning itself as a significant player in the global stablecoin market, fostering an environment ripe for innovation and adoption.
