Hyperliquid Faces Revenue Decline Amid RWA Perpetual Futures Surge
Hyperliquid Experiences Revenue Drops While RWA Perpetual Futures Soar
Hyperliquid has reported a significant decline in revenue even as its perpetual futures market, particularly in real-world assets (RWA), experiences unprecedented growth. The platform’s revenue has now fallen for four consecutive quarters, coinciding with a record high in open interest.
Record Open Interest Achieved
As of July 13, 2026, Hyperliquid’s open interest reached over $11 billion, demonstrating a booming demand for its perpetual futures contracts. In the past 30 days, the platform has handled nearly $178 billion in perpetual futures volume. Hyperliquid now claims approximately 9% of global open perp positions, an increase from under 7% in late May.
Declining Revenue Amid Increased Trading
Despite the rising trade volumes, Hyperliquid’s gross protocol revenue has seen a sharp decline from a peak of approximately $357 million in the third quarter of 2025 to around $202 million in the second quarter of 2026, representing a 43% drop. This downturn in revenue occurs alongside an increase in trading activity, which is largely attributed to changes in the platform’s fee-sharing structure.
Fee-Sharing Program Impact
The Hyperliquid Improvement Proposal (HIP-3) allows users who stake 500,000 HYPE tokens, valued at about $28 million, to launch their own perpetual futures markets. This new system has led to builder-deployed markets now accounting for approximately half of Hyperliquid’s perpetual volume, compared to just 2% at the beginning of 2026.
Growth of RWA Perpetuals
RWA perpetual futures, which include contracts linked to commodities like crude oil and popular stocks such as Nvidia and Tesla, have surged in popularity. This month, RWA contracts overtook Bitcoin as the leading market on Hyperliquid, with their open interest hitting a record $3.6 billion. This growth trend represents a shift, as these contracts accounted for 52% of the platform’s weekly volume.
Challenges Ahead for HYPE
Hyperliquid’s Assistance Fund has been active in absorbing trading fees, resulting in the buyback of nearly 44.5 million HYPE tokens from circulation. However, as revenue declines, the fund’s activity also diminishes, prompting concerns about the future support for HYPE’s value. On August 6, almost 10 million HYPE was unlocked as part of a contributor release, putting additional pressure on the token’s market dynamics.
Market Sentiment and Competition
The broader market sentiment around HYPE remains cautious, with the token trading around $55, down from a high of almost $77 in mid-June. Institutional investors have reportedly moved substantial amounts of HYPE to exchanges, indicating a retreat in market confidence. Meanwhile, alternative platforms like Robinhood Chain have emerged, drawing substantial trading volume and user interest.
Conclusion
While Hyperliquid continues to establish a significant share within the crypto derivatives market, the ongoing revenue decline amid rising interest casts a shadow over its future growth. Stakeholder sentiment remains mixed as the attractive participation of RWA perpetuals contrasts with the challenges faced by HYPE.
