Surge in Hardware Wallet Sales in Russia Ahead of New Crypto Regulations
As Russia prepares to implement new cryptocurrency regulations, sales of hardware wallets have skyrocketed, more than doubling in the first half of 2026. This surge reflects a growing interest among consumers in secure cryptocurrency storage options.
Significant Increases in Retail Sales
Retailer M.Video reported a remarkable 107% increase in hardware wallet unit sales in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter. Additionally, the value of these sales rose by 92%. Wildberries, another major Russian retailer, also noted increased demand, with unit sales climbing 84% year-on-year in the first half of the year and a 60% increase in sales value.
Market Context and Consumer Trends
Despite the increase in sales, neither retailer disclosed specific unit totals, leaving some uncertainty regarding the overall market scale. The growing inclination towards hardware wallets, which store private keys on dedicated devices to limit exposure risks, appears to be driven by upcoming regulations.
Impending Regulatory Changes
Russian law currently does not prohibit the use of non-custodial wallets. However, it does impose restrictions on withdrawing assets from digital depositories to personal wallets, creating a transition period that extends until July 1, 2027. After this date, all cryptocurrency transactions will need to pass through regulated entities, including banks, marking a significant shift in the financial landscape for Russian crypto users.
Challenges Ahead for Hardware Wallets
While consumer interest in hardware wallets is growing, these devices are not without risks. Notably, a firmware flaw was recently disclosed by Coinkite, impacting Coldcard wallets and leading to estimated losses exceeding $116 million.
The impending changes to Russia’s cryptocurrency framework, taking effect on September 1, 2026, will allow regulated exchanges to operate and enable certain retail investors to purchase liquid cryptocurrencies while imposing restrictions on domestic crypto payments. As the regulatory landscape evolves, the trend towards secure storage options like hardware wallets is likely to continue.
