Grayscale CFO Edward McGee Resigns After Seven-Year Tenure

Grayscale CFO Edward McGee Resigns After Seven Years

Edward McGee, the Chief Financial Officer of Grayscale, has stepped down after serving for seven years. His departure, effective July 2, was attributed to personal reasons and was not the result of any disagreements with the company’s operations, policies, or practices, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Leadership Changes at Grayscale

In light of McGee’s resignation, Grayscale has appointed Kathryn Masci and Daniel Plourde as interim co-chief financial officers. Masci, who joined Grayscale in 2020 as senior vice president of finance, will also assume the role of principal financial and accounting officer and will join the board of managers. Plourde, who came on board in 2022, has held senior positions with Gabelli Asset Management and State Street Global Advisors.

Context of Departures

McGee is the latest in a series of executive departures from Grayscale. Just weeks prior, John Hoffman, the managing director and head of distribution and partnerships, left the firm to join Ondo Finance. These changes come as Grayscale has paused its plans for an initial public offering (IPO). The company confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO in November but has since halted its preparations due to market conditions, with no plans to resume before the fourth quarter.

About Grayscale

Founded in 2013 and owned by Digital Currency Group, Grayscale has played a crucial role in bridging traditional finance and digital assets through its regulated investment products, particularly its Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). The trust was converted into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) in January 2025, though it has seen a decline in assets under management, dropping from about $28.5 billion to roughly $8.5 billion as investors turned to other, lower-fee ETFs.
