Goldman Sachs Acquires NEOS Investments, Targets Bitcoin ETF Market
Goldman Sachs Expands Bitcoin ETF Footprint
Goldman Sachs has taken a significant step into the bitcoin investment space by acquiring NEOS Investments for up to $2.25 billion. NEOS is behind the BTCI bitcoin synthetic exchange-traded fund (ETF), which has gained substantial traction since its inception.
Details of the Acquisition
The deal, comprised of both cash and equity elements, values NEOS at up to $2.25 billion, contingent on certain performance targets. It is set to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approval.
NEOS and BTCI Performance
NEOS manages the BTCI ETF, which has attracted over $1.1 billion in assets since its launch in October 2024. This fund has been able to yield approximately 27% for its investors, according to Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg. BTCI operates by holding spot bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) and utilizes options trading to generate monthly distributions.
Strategic Motives
Goldman Sachs’s acquisition aligns strategically with its recent filing of the Goldman Sachs Bitcoin Premium Income ETF. This move has been interpreted as a tactical maneuver to position itself favorably against competitors like BlackRock, which recently launched its own bitcoin income ETF, BITA.
According to Balchunas, this acquisition solidifies Goldman’s intentions in expanding its ETF offerings, which now encompass more than $130 billion in total ETF assets managed.
NEOS Co-Founders Join Goldman Sachs
Following the acquisition’s completion, NEOS co-founders Troy Cates and Garrett Paolella will join Goldman Sachs as partners, further enhancing Goldman’s capabilities in the ETF landscape.
Market Implications
With the derivative income ETF sector experiencing swift growth, estimated at $180 billion industry-wide, Goldman’s entry signifies a robust commitment to this segment rather than attempting to organically grow in the competitive ETF environment.
