Gen Z Traders Drive ETF Share to 25% on Binance
In a notable shift in trading behavior, Gen Z traders on Binance have raised their allocation to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to 25% of their equity trading volume as of early August 2026. This marks a significant change as their investments in individual stocks show a decline.
ETF Growth and Shift in Preferences
Binance reported that ETFs accounted for 21.9% of Gen Z’s net equity inflows in July, an increase from 18.5% in June. Conversely, the share directed toward individual stocks fell from 77% in June to 74.2% in July.
Lower Trading Frequency Compared to Older Generations
Research indicates that while Gen Z is increasing its ETF investments, they are generally trading less frequently compared to Millennials and Gen X. In July, Gen Z completed an average of 13 trades per month in traditional finance perpetuals, compared to 17 for Millennials and 16.5 for Gen X traders.
Holding Patterns Among Gen Z Traders
Data from Binance shows that a significant portion of Gen Z accounts are adopting a buy-and-hold strategy. For instance, among Gen Z direct-equity accounts, 22% had never executed a sell order. This retention rate is higher than for Gen X at 19% and Baby Boomers at 9%. Notably, Millennials have the largest buy-only demographic, with 30% of their accounts showing no sell orders.
Top Assets Among Buy-Only Gen Z Traders
The most commonly purchased assets by Gen Z include tech companies like Broadcom and Tesla, alongside the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF. However, Binance has cautioned against interpreting the buy-only activity as a definitive long-term investment strategy, as some traders may have recently entered the market.
Limited Interest in Leveraged ETFs
Despite the potential for amplified gains, leveraged and inverse ETFs have seen minimal engagement from Gen Z. Binance’s reports indicate that a substantial 88.2% of Gen Z’s traditional finance perpetual accounts did not trade these types of ETFs.
Implications for Tokenized Stocks
The findings also point to a growing interest in tokenized stocks, as Binance has started offering tokenized versions of notable U.S. companies. Following the launch of their bStocks service in June, the exchange reported high trading volumes, with early trading days averaging around $143 million in volume.
Market Competition and Future Prospects
Binance’s bStocks have begun to compete closely with other platforms, briefly surpassing Kraken’s xStocks in market value shortly after their launch. The evolving landscape of tokenized equity products could have significant implications for trading behaviors among younger generations moving forward.
