Delio CEO Sentenced to 15 Years for $50 Million Crypto Fraud in South Korea

Delio CEO Faces 15-Year Prison Sentence

A South Korean court has sentenced the CEO of the centralized finance (CeFi) platform Delio, identified only as Mr. Jeong, to 15 years in prison. This sentence follows his conviction in connection with a fraud case involving approximately $50 million, which affected more than 1,100 customers.

Details of the Case

According to local news outlet Newsis, Mr. Jeong was found guilty of embezzling digital assets from customers who had entrusted him with their investments. The court revealed that Delio had been operating under false pretenses, having obtained a virtual asset trading license unlawfully.

Delio, which declared bankruptcy in November 2024, had promised high yields to its customers who deposited cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ethereum. However, on June 14, 2023, the company unexpectedly locked its customers out of their funds, leading to significant financial losses.

Prosecutorial Actions and Court Findings

The Seoul Southern District Court cited that Mr. Jeong defrauded victims of approximately 70 billion won (around $50 million) in virtual assets. Initially, prosecutors sought a 20-year sentence, but significant portions of their evidence were dismissed due to procedural issues raised by the defense.

While Mr. Jeong faced accusations related to more than 2,800 victims, he was ultimately convicted in the case involving over 1,100 investors. His defense team is reportedly planning to appeal the conviction.

Broader Context of Crypto-Related Fraud in South Korea

This ruling against Delio adds to a growing list of high-profile cryptocurrency fraud cases in South Korea. Notably, Do Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs, faced scrutiny after the collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin in May 2022, which resulted in a loss of around $40 billion for investors. Additionally, in 2022, seven executives from the crypto exchange V Global received prison sentences for a $1.7 billion fraud scheme, highlighting ongoing challenges within the crypto regulatory landscape.
