James Chanos Claims $80B Arbitrage Opportunity in Bitcoin Strategy

James Chanos Highlights $80 Billion Bitcoin Arbitrage Opportunity

On August 18, 2026, renowned short seller James Chanos described Strategy and Bitcoin as presenting an $80 billion actionable spread, reigniting discussions surrounding the valuation of Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin treasury company.

Current Holdings and Market Value

After a series of sales, Strategy currently holds 840,447 BTC, a decline from its prior peak of 847,363 BTC disclosed in June. As of Tuesday morning, with Bitcoin priced at approximately $64,188, these holdings were valued at about $53.95 billion. Strategy’s market capitalization stood at about $34.4 billion, highlighting a significant valuation gap.

Understanding the Arbitrage Claim

Chanos characterized the disparity as one of the largest “pure arbitrage opportunities” he has observed. Previously, he had engaged in a short position on Strategy’s MSTR shares while simultaneously holding long positions in Bitcoin. However, his recent claims require additional context. The latest figures indicate that Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings have diminished since its reported peaks, with recent sales contributing to the new total.

The $19.5 billion difference between Strategy’s Bitcoin value and its market capitalization is not an arbitrage profit, as it does not account for debt, preferred stock, cash reserves, or operational expenses necessary for maintaining a hedged position.

Market Dynamics and Management Risks

Chanos’ calculation of the $80 billion spread was not fully disclosed, rendering it a subjective characterization rather than a directly verifiable figure. The modified net asset value (mNAV) of Strategy was around 1.04, indicating a slight premium when accounting for corporate structure and liabilities.

As the company balances its operations with various securities, including preferred shares that carry dividends between 8% to 12%, the comparison between MSTR equity and Bitcoin ownership becomes complex. Investors in MSTR are exposed to different risks, including corporate management and financing, compared to the straightforward ownership of Bitcoin.

Recent Financial Movements and Implications

Previously, it was documented that Strategy had acquired Bitcoin at an average cost of $75,651, amounting to approximately $64.1 billion. Following their monetization program, which allowed for sales to fund operational costs, the current balance of 840,447 BTC represents a significant unrealized loss of approximately $9.4 billion when compared to their acquisition cost.

Furthermore, rumors suggest that Strategy’s management is considering additional Bitcoin sales to bolster its dollar reserve, which recently reached $4.65 billion.

Looking Ahead

Chanos’ previous position was closed in November 2025 after he deemed the arbitrage opportunity insufficient. His recent remarks do not confirm whether he has re-entered the trade or provide details on position size or strategy. Any future SEC filings will reveal whether Strategy continues its path of selling Bitcoin, issuing MSTR shares, or reacquiring preferred securities, all of which will significantly influence their market standing.
