Cardano Transfers Core Development to External Teams in Decentralization Effort

Cardano Transfers Core Development to External Teams

In a significant shift aimed at enhancing decentralization, Cardano developer Input Output announced that it will transfer control of key blockchain components to external teams. This process is set to begin in August and will span into 2027.

Details of the Handover

The components being handed over include the Haskell node, Plutus smart contract platform, Daedalus wallet, and Hydra scaling technology. This strategic move is designed to reduce reliance on Input Output itself, as the company initiates the next phase of Cardano’s decentralization journey.

Involvement of External Specialists

The handover involves several specialist firms, notably Se7en Labs, which focuses on Solana infrastructure, and Teragone, known for their work in software development and cryptographic research. They will assume responsibility for various components in the Cardano ecosystem.

Vision for Community-Driven Development

As part of its decentralization agenda, Input Output intends to delegate more responsibilities for software development to independent teams. This includes the maintenance of Cardano implementations written in Haskell, Rust, and Go. Organizations like Intersect and Pragma will oversee formal specifications, ensuring that development remains subject to community input and voting.

Challenges and Market Conditions

This announcement comes at a time when Cardano is experiencing reduced network activity, with a reported total value locked (TVL) of just $70 million compared to competitors such as Tron and Solana, which boast over $4 billion. Additionally, the price of ADA has dropped significantly, trading at approximately 16 cents, down nearly 95% from its August 2021 peak of $3.10.

Looking Forward

Charles Hoskinson, CEO and founder of Cardano, noted that for the network to thrive, more specialized teams are needed. He acknowledged that substantial changes and hardships, described as “growing pains,” are part of the path forward. His focus is now shifting towards research and new initiatives through IO Labs and IO Ventures.

Conclusion

The transition of core development responsibilities marks a pivotal moment for Cardano, as the project aims to foster a more sustainable and decentralized ecosystem. By leveraging the expertise of external teams, Cardano hopes to revive its growth trajectory and enhance innovation within the blockchain space.
