Bybit Initiates Legal Action Against North Korea Over Massive Crypto Theft

Bybit Takes Legal Action Against North Korea

Bybit has filed a lawsuit in a U.S. federal court against North Korea, its intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau, and the Lazarus Group. The exchange seeks to recover assets that were stolen during a significant $1.5 billion cyberattack that occurred in February 2025.

Details of the Cyberattack

The breach, which took place on February 21, 2025, resulted in the theft of over 400,000 Ether (ETH) from Bybit. This incident marked the largest recorded theft in the cryptocurrency space, prompting immediate attention from U.S. authorities. The FBI later attributed the hack to North Korean actors.

Legal Measures Undertaken

The lawsuit was lodged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Along with the legal filing, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that freezes certain stolen assets associated with unidentified defendants involved in the case. This injunction prevents those individuals or entities from transferring or selling the stolen assets while the litigation is ongoing.

Bybit’s Ongoing Efforts

Ben Zhou, co-founder and CEO of Bybit, emphasized the exchange’s commitment to protecting its users and recovering the stolen funds. “Our focus has never changed: protect our users first, recover what we can, and make sure the people behind these attacks are held accountable,” Zhou stated.

Impact of the Breach

The attack has been a significant contributor to North Korea’s escalating theft of cryptocurrencies, which, according to Chainalysis, amounted to an estimated $2.02 billion in total for the year 2025. Bybit’s case adds to ongoing U.S. efforts to combat North Korean cybercrime and recover stolen digital assets.

Next Steps for Bybit

The exchange plans to seek further remedies as the lawsuit proceeds. Recovery efforts will depend on both the compliance of the entities holding the stolen assets and ongoing investigations by U.S. law enforcement. As the landscape of crypto crime evolves, so too does the challenge of tracing and securing stolen funds.
