BlackRock Launches Tokenized Access to $311 Billion Money Market Funds in Europe

BlackRock Expands Tokenized Offerings in Europe

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, has made significant strides in the realm of tokenization by introducing a platform that accesses $311 billion in European money market funds. This move follows a recent expansion of a similar tokenized cash platform in the United States.

A Broad Offering Across European Markets

The newly launched offerings encompass 12 tokenized share classes based on six funds distributed across 15 European markets. Each of these funds complies with the European Union’s UCITS regulations. Share classes are available in various currencies, including sterling, euro, and dollar.

Purpose and Market Trends

This expansion underscores the growing interest in holding tangible assets on blockchain technology. According to a report from rwa.xyz, the market for tokenized real-world assets has surged over 200% within the past year, surpassing $30 billion. Financial analysts at Citi predict that the value of tokenized securities could reach as high as $5.5 trillion by 2030.

Target Audience for Tokenization

BlackRock’s tokenized funds are particularly designed for corporate treasurers who rely on money market funds to manage their operating cash and reserves. This initiative also targets asset managers and investment consultants operating in both traditional and digital markets. Beccy Milchem, BlackRock’s global head of cash distribution, emphasized that the addition of tokenized share classes offers enhanced digital capabilities while maintaining established liquidity management processes.

Collaboration with JPMorgan

The tokenization of the Institutional Cash Series money market funds was carried out in collaboration with JPMorgan, utilizing the bank’s Kinexys platform. The new on-chain share classes are now accessible in countries such as Bermuda, France, Germany, and the U.K. among others.
