BitMart Exchange To Cease Operations After Nine Years, BMX Token Plummets

BitMart Exchange Announces Closure After Nine Years

BitMart, a cryptocurrency exchange, has announced its intention to wind down operations after nine years of service. The exchange will halt all trading activities by August 26, 2026, with plans to fully cease operations by January 31, 2027.

Trading and Withdrawal Timeline

Effective immediately, BitMart will stop accepting new registrations, deposits, and trading orders. Futures accounts will transition to a reduce-only mode. Users will have until August 26 to close trades, but withdrawals will remain available for six months. However, the exchange has urged users to complete verification processes and submit withdrawal requests before the stipulated deadline.

Reason for Closure Remains Unclear

BitMart cited its “operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction” as reasons for this closure but did not provide further specifics regarding these factors. The announcement has raised concerns among users as the exchange does not detail which conditions influenced the decision.

BMX Token Sees Significant Drop

Following the announcement, the BMX token, which is associated with the exchange, experienced a crash of approximately 58%, falling to around 8 cents. This drop represents a continuation of a long-term decline, with the token’s market value now sitting at approximately $27 million.

User Concerns Over Withdrawal Process

While withdrawals are allowed, BitMart warned that requests could face extensive reviews which may include identity verification and screening checks. This could potentially delay processing times, especially if the volume of requests increases significantly.

Past Issues Highlight Challenges

BitMart has faced challenges in the past, notably suffering a loss of about $196 million from a hot-wallet breach in December 2021. The company managed to cover customer losses from that incident, but it raises questions about its operational viability in current market conditions.
