Bitfinex Secures Comprehensive Regulatory Licenses in El Salvador

Bitfinex Secures Comprehensive Regulatory Licenses in El Salvador

Bitfinex has finalized its Digital Asset Service Provider license in El Salvador, which now supports a full regulatory framework across spot trading, crypto derivatives, and tokenized securities. This development marks a significant milestone in Bitfinex’s ongoing expansion into Latin America.

Broad Licensing Scope

The newly granted license allows Bitfinex to operate alongside Bitfinex Securities El Salvador and Bitfinex Derivatives El Salvador, reinforcing its presence in three key areas of digital asset trading. On May 12, Bitfinex announced the approval after the National Commission of Digital Assets (CNAD) registered two of its associated entities earlier in April.

Regulatory Highlights

The approval solidifies Bitfinex’s commitment to compliance and innovation in the region. Paolo Ardoino, Bitfinex’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of these licenses, stating,

“Holding licenses across our spot, derivatives, and securities businesses reflects our long-standing commitment to the country and to operating under proper and innovative supervision.”

Bitfinex has taken measures to ensure that user eligibility and access to services align with local regulations, as its main platform restricts use by U.S. persons and other prohibited users.

Background on Licensing Developments

Earlier, Bitfinex Securities achieved approval under El Salvador’s Digital Assets Issuance Law, with its registration verified on October 24, 2023. This platform facilitates the trading of tokenized financial products, opening doors to various investment opportunities including treasury bills and linked instruments. Furthermore, the derivatives entity followed suit in January 2025, enhancing Bitfinex’s capability in the derivatives landscape.

Broader Context of Digital Assets in El Salvador

El Salvador’s legal framework for digital assets was established in 2023, enabling regulated trading platforms, custodians, and issuers to operate. The CNAD supervises these developments, maintaining a registry of over 70 licensed service providers, including international firms like Binance and Bitget.

Additionally, the country has embarked on creating an investment banking framework, allowing specialized institutions to offer Bitcoin and other digital asset services. This regulatory evolution positions El Salvador as a significant player in the global digital asset market.

Future Operations and Expansion

The newly obtained license not only fortifies Bitfinex’s regulatory position in El Salvador but also serves as a pivotal component of its Latin American strategy. Although specific customer numbers and future product developments remain unconfirmed, the enhanced regulatory status lays the groundwork for future product offerings and potential expansions.
