Traders Bet Big on Bitcoin Rising to $72,000 by Month’s End

In a bold move, large traders are positioning themselves for a significant rise in Bitcoin’s price, targeting $72,000 by the end of July, coinciding with a key Federal Reserve meeting. This strategic betting comes as the cryptocurrency price stands at approximately $64,118.

Massive Options Activity on Deribit

Recent data from the options market indicates that traders have purchased an impressive $2.5 billion in notional bitcoin call spreads on the derivatives platform Deribit. This activity is particularly notable as it involves the purchase of 20,000 contracts for the $70,000 call option expiring on July 31, paired with a sale of an equal number of contracts for the $72,000 call of the same expiry. Such moves reflect a bull call spread strategy, which suggests expectations for moderate price increases.

Significant Timing with Federal Reserve Decision

The timing of this trading surge is noteworthy, as it aligns with the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for July 29, just two days before the options contracts’ expiration. The flow of call spreads, particularly of this magnitude, is often seen as indicative of institutional interest rather than retail trading.

Market Sentiment and Economic Context

Many traders seem to have confidence in the recent bounce of Bitcoin from under $58,000 to its current value, anticipating that the Federal Reserve’s decision might propel the cryptocurrency’s price even higher. As of now, Fed funds futures suggest a high probability that the central bank will maintain its interest rate at 3.5%-3.75% during this meeting, with expectations diminished for immediate rate hikes following recent inflation data showing reduced price pressures.

Despite the easing of inflationary fears due to a drop in oil prices linked to geopolitical developments, tensions have escalated this week, particularly between the U.S. and Iran, raising concerns over potential impacts on inflation moving forward. Yet, amidst these uncertainties, some traders are placing their bets on continued upward movement in Bitcoin prices.
