Bitcoin’s Rally Faces a Crucial Test at $68,000 While Market Slumbers

Bitcoin’s Rally Faces a Crucial Test at $68,000

The price of Bitcoin is approaching a significant resistance level at $68,000, marking a pivotal moment for its ongoing rally. Following a rebound of approximately 15% from its early July lows, Bitcoin surpassed $66,600 for the first time in over a month, creating anticipation about whether it can maintain this upward momentum.

Market Sentiment and Resistance Level

This recent surge has drawn attention because $68,000 represents a critical point for many recent buyers who may be inclined to sell. Analysts at Bitfinex have indicated that this level aligns with the average purchase price of Bitcoin holders from the past five months. They caution that many investors who have been at a loss might see an opportunity to break even, potentially leading to increased selling pressure.

Additionally, the $68,000 mark coincides with Bitcoin’s peak in mid-June, a time when the cryptocurrency faced a reversal that led to fresh lows below $58,000. The Bitfinex report suggests that the anticipated retest of this resistance zone may trigger significant market reactions.

Improvement Amid Market Caution

Despite the looming resistance, there are indications that market conditions are beginning to stabilize. Spot market activity for Bitcoin has shown signs of improvement, transitioning from substantial outflows to modest inflows, particularly in the context of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs.

However, analysts note that demand remains subdued, with ETF flows and purchases by institutional entities falling short of early 2026 levels. Currently, Bitcoin continues to constitute nearly 67% of spot trading volume, a stark increase from about 50% a year ago, highlighting a defensive stance among traders.

Signs of Market Slumber

K33 Research mirrors these sentiments, reporting a decline in institutional engagement as open interest in CME Bitcoin futures reaches a low not seen since 2023. The report reflects a reluctance among speculative traders to leverage their positions despite Bitcoin’s recent gains. Average daily trading volumes have also hovered around $2.3 billion, near yearly lows.

In this context, K33 describes the environment as a “typical summer slumber,” with subdued trading activity expected as the summer progresses. It notes that only about one-third of trading days this month have experienced net outflows, compared to nearly 90% in June, indicating a potential easing of selling pressure yet showing that buyers have not fully re-entered the market.
