Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Drops 14% Amid Declining Revenues

Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Experiences Significant Decline

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty has decreased by 14%, now sitting at 126.23 trillion, marking a pivotal moment in its history as it slips below levels from the previous year. This decline is attributed to deteriorating mining economics and a significant shift of resources toward artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the challenges faced by miners.

Details of the Difficulty Adjustment

The mining difficulty figure, which indicates how challenging it is to mine a Bitcoin block, fell 0.74% in a recent adjustment, which occurs approximately every two weeks or every 2,016 blocks. This new metric is approximately 1.1% lower than the same figure a year ago and a staggering 19.1% decrease from the all-time high of 155.97 trillion recorded in November 2025.

Market Influences and Comparisons

The current downturn in mining difficulty is largely driven by weak market conditions rather than external regulations, such as the prior effects from China’s mining ban in 2021, which had drastically reduced the network’s hashing power. Recent assessments from Luxor’s Hashrate Index attribute this decline to several factors, including:

  • Falling Bitcoin prices and diminished mining revenues.
  • Redirection of capital and operational resources towards AI and high-performance computing.
  • Curtailments in Texas and operational disruptions in other mining regions.

Revenue Prospects for Miners

The projected hashprice, which measures expected revenue per unit of computing power, fell to $27.66 per petahash per day in late June, approaching February’s low, although it has since risen to $31.7. However, the forward market data forecasts only a slight increase, predicting an average hashprice of $31.85 per petahash per day through December 2026, indicating miners may have little relief in revenue for the remainder of the year.
