AZ-Com Maruwa to Implement Yen Stablecoin JPYC for Payments

AZ-Com Maruwa to Implement Yen Stablecoin JPYC for Payments

AZ-Com Maruwa Holdings, a major logistics firm listed in Tokyo, is set to become the first company in Japan to roll out a corporate stablecoin for payments. The company plans to use JPYC, a yen-pegged stablecoin, to pay approximately 2,300 partners, including truck drivers and subcontractors, marking a significant step towards mainstream adoption of digital currencies within corporate transactions.

Details of the Stablecoin Adoption

This initiative by AZ-Com Maruwa follows its longstanding relationship with Amazon Japan, for which it has been providing distribution services since 2017. The company reported a revenue of 230.5 billion yen (around $1.4 billion) for the fiscal year that concluded in March.

JPYC, managed by JPYC Inc., is Japan’s first fully regulated stablecoin, introduced under the Payment Services Act. It maintains a strict 1:1 exchange rate with the yen and is entirely backed by bank deposits and Japanese government bonds. As of last week, the circulation of JPYC has surpassed 2 billion yen.

Implications for the Japanese Logistics Sector

The adoption of JPYC aims to enhance cash flow management for truck drivers and small carriers in Japan, especially in light of ongoing labor shortages and an aging workforce. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Maruwa envisions that the ability to instantly convert stablecoin payments to yen without fees will attract more individuals to contracting positions in this sector.

Nikkei Asia also mentioned that AZ-Com Maruwa is considering a formal partnership with JPYC’s issuer along with plans for a significant investment of 1 billion yen into the stablecoin.

Growing Acceptance of Stablecoins

This move comes shortly after news that Lawson, a prominent Japanese convenience store chain, will initiate a pilot program for accepting JPYC payments at their Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo starting in early August.

The simultaneous announcements from Lawson and AZ-Com Maruwa suggest a rapid acceptance and expansion of regulated stablecoins in Japan’s corporate payments landscape, transitioning from preliminary consumer trials to larger-scale business applications within a remarkably short time.
