Mubadala Capital Embraces Tokenization with Coinbase Partnership
Mubadala Capital Incorporates Blockchain with New Tokenized Fund
Mubadala Capital, the asset management wing of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, has entered the world of tokenization by launching a tokenized version of one of its private markets investment strategies. This initiative is facilitated through a partnership with KAIO, a UAE-based specialist in tokenization, and aims to broaden access to qualified investors.
Details of the Tokenization Initiative
The tokenized fund is now available across multiple blockchain networks, including Coinbase’s Base, Solana, and Sui. It has reportedly attracted around $75 million in onchain assets. Moreover, Coinbase is also investing in the fund on its corporate balance sheet, marking a significant venture into tokenized private market products by a publicly traded cryptocurrency company. However, the precise amount of Coinbase’s investment has not been disclosed.
Growing Trend in Tokenization
Mubadala Capital’s move highlights an ongoing trend among major investment firms adopting blockchain technology for fund management. Other notable firms, such as BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Fidelity, have also launched or expanded their tokenized fund offerings, primarily focusing on U.S. Treasuries and private credit. According to reports, the market for tokenized securities could grow to approximately $5.5 trillion by 2030.
Strategic Implications
Max Franzetti, head of Mubadala Capital Solutions, explained that the tokenization strategy was designed to enhance investor access without sacrificing institutional investment principles. He noted, “This strategy was built on differentiated access – to deal flow, to co-investment, to a global network that most investors cannot reach on their own. Bringing it onchain extends that access to a new class of qualified investors.”
Coinbase’s Perspective on Tokenization
Brett Tejpaul, head of Coinbase Institutional, commented on the significance of incorporating tokenized assets into their investment portfolio. He stated that such assets not only reflect growing interest but also enhance the transparency and accessibility of financial products for qualified investors.
The UAE’s Role in Tokenized Finance
This development aligns with the broader ambitions of the UAE to establish itself as a hub for tokenized finance. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are fast becoming key players in the digital asset space, supported by regulatory frameworks that encourage innovation in tokenized funds and financial products.
