Morpho Launches Midnight Protocol for Fixed-Term Lending on Base
Morpho has announced the launch of its new fixed-rate lending protocol known as Midnight on the Base network. This development aims to enhance its on-chain lending capabilities by introducing a structure similar to traditional finance, thereby promoting fixed-rate and fixed-term borrowing.
Protocol Features and Structure
With Midnight, both lenders and borrowers have the opportunity to negotiate loan terms directly, including interest rates and maturity dates, moving away from traditional variable rate models. According to Morpho, this protocol supports both institutional and retail lending, with over $11 billion already deposited in its lending network.
The Midnight protocol was first unveiled in a white paper released in May and is part of Morpho’s strategy to expand its lending services beyond its existing variable-rate product, Morpho Blue. The new lending model allows users to establish tailored loan conditions without relying on preset pricing algorithms.
Emulating Traditional Credit Markets
Paul Frambot, Co-founder and CEO of Morpho, emphasized the importance of fixed-rate lending, stating, “Fixed-rate lending is fundamental to how global credit markets operate. Without it, on-chain markets remain incomplete.” Through Midnight, they aim to mirror the functioning of conventional credit markets, facilitating an environment where fixed-rate borrowing is commonplace.
Distinctive Matching System
Unlike many decentralized lending models that utilize floating interest rates, Midnight’s intent-based peer-to-peer matching system allows participants to connect directly, enhancing the user experience. The protocol not only externalizes pricing and risk management but also classifies fixed-term loans as transferable assets, potentially creating secondary markets for these credit positions.
Liquidity and Offer Management
Addressing liquidity challenges prevalent in previous fixed-rate protocols, Morpho’s Midnight employs an offer-based system whereby lenders can continue earning yields through Morpho Blue until their offers are accepted. Once a match occurs, liquidity is sourced specifically for that transaction, enabling users to manage their positions flexibly.
Focus on Institutional Lending
The rollout of Midnight coincides with Morpho’s broader ambition to strengthen its institutional lending vertical, evidenced by a substantial funding round earlier this year that raised $175 million. Key investors include Paradigm, a16z Crypto, and Ribbit Capital, among others, with Morpho reportedly valued at around $2 billion.
Numerous organizations, including Coinbase and Kraken, are already utilizing Morpho’s existing infrastructure to develop on-chain credit products. While it remains unconfirmed if Coinbase plans to integrate Midnight into their existing lending services, Frambot noted that there is significant interest from various platforms and institutions regarding the new protocol.
