Active Crypto VC Market Amid Decline in DeFi Funding

Crypto VC Funding Remains Strong

In July, the crypto venture capital (VC) market demonstrated resilience with investments totaling $1.2 billion. This uptick in funding comes at a time when decentralized finance (DeFi) funding has plummeted to its lowest quarterly levels since late 2023.

Investor Activity and Funding Trends

Despite a noticeable decline in deal activity, the overall crypto landscape remains vibrant. Coinbase Ventures has emerged as a key player, leading the investment charge in various sectors, including exchanges, prediction markets, payments, and AI initiatives.

Data provided by CryptoRank indicates that approximately 25 funding rounds were finalized in July, reflecting a contraction in the number of deals relative to past months. Earlier in 2026, the VC market saw significant fluctuations, with January recording $1.14 billion in fundraising, dipping to $896.3 million in February, and then averaging $2.2 billion in March, driven by around 85 successful deals.

Monthly Funding Analysis

Following March’s peak, funding saw a drastic reduction in April, plummeting to a reported $659 million. The discrepancy in reported figures may arise from variations in deal classification methods. By May, however, funding rebounded to $3.89 billion, marking the highest recorded month despite the remaining deal count being below March’s numbers.

June then experienced another slowdown, with fundraising cooling to $1.44 billion across roughly 60 deals. The preliminary figure for July suggests that fewer transactions are producing most of this capital.

Active Investors in the Crypto Space

In terms of activity, Coinbase Ventures is notably the most engaged investor in the past six months, handling 33 investments. Other notable firms include Animoca Brands with 19 deals, and Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z crypto with 18 deals.

Decline in DeFi Funding

Amid these developments, DeFi funding has sharply declined, with the latest data revealing that DeFi ventures raised about $654 million over the past six months, positioning the sector behind other crypto categories like exchanges and payments.

The falling investment in DeFi has been a trend over the last three quarters, with the latest quarterly amount hitting the lowest point since Q4 2023. Furthermore, the number of DeFi funding rounds has also decreased, reaching lows not seen since 2020, indicating a more cautious investment approach towards DeFi projects.

Looking Ahead

The shifting attention from DeFi to other sectors reflects broader trends within the crypto economy. Investors are increasingly selective, choosing to channel capital into projects perceived as having more immediate potential.

As the market continues to adjust, the active participation of major investors suggests that while overall deal activity may be down, targeted investments in specific crypto projects remain a strategic focus for venture capitalists in the evolving landscape.
