Michael Saylor Critiques Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 as Threat to Neutrality

Michael Saylor Critiques Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110

Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor has voiced strong opposition to Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (BIP-110), which aims to restrict certain data storage on the Bitcoin blockchain to combat so-called “spam” transactions. Saylor argues that this proposal undermines the network’s neutrality and could set a troubling precedent for censorship.

Concerns Over BIP-110

In a detailed critique shared on social media platform X, Saylor stated, “The proposed cure is more dangerous than the condition,” emphasizing that BIP-110 would constrain valid blockchain activities and complicate future options for users.

He opposes the idea of elevating subjective human judgment to a level of protocol law, arguing that banning spam would disrupt Bitcoin’s core principle of being a decentralized and neutral monetary system. Saylor highlighted that Bitcoin cannot discern the intent behind data, which could include various forms of legitimate applications beyond just monetary use.

The Proposal’s Mechanics

BIP-110 suggests implementing a one-year temporary soft fork that introduces several consensus restrictions, including limits on data payload sizes and adjustments to the approval process for future upgrades. Supporters claim that these changes are an effort to refocus Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer digital currency rather than a general-purpose data storage platform.

One major point of contention is the proposal’s recommendation to lower the threshold for upgrade approval from 95% to 55% of miner votes. Saylor warns that such a change could foment discord within the community, increasing the risk of network splits.

Potential Economic Ramifications

Saylor, who holds a substantial Bitcoin treasury through his firm, cautions that restricting certain blockchain uses could negatively impact Bitcoin’s economic framework. With a decreased demand for network usage, miners may face reduced incentives, ultimately threatening the security of the blockchain.

Alternative Solutions Proposed

Rather than altering fundamental consensus rules, Saylor advocates for utilizing market-based mechanisms and individual relay policies to manage how data is handled on the network. He suggests that users who wish to avoid spam should adjust their own node configurations or accept market-based fees, rather than imposing blanket changes affecting all users.

Saylor concludes by calling on the Bitcoin community to remain committed to the long-term vision of an open and permissionless financial ecosystem, stating, “Bitcoin does not need guardians of purity; it needs guardians of neutrality.”
